Boonen Beenen, 2023

At the summit of the Taaienberg (Maarkedal, Belgium)—also known as the Boonenberg—stands this tribute to former cyclist Tom Boonen (born in Mol, Belgium, on 5 October 1980). He made this famous cobbled climb his trademark, often launching explosive attacks there to make the decisive move in the Tour of Flanders. He won this cycling classic three times: in 2005, 2006, and 2012.
The sculpture is a bronze cast of his legs, mounted on a concrete plinth. The plinth is kept low to allow recreational cyclists and fans of Tom Boonen to rest and/or pose next to the sculpture.
Bovenop de Taaienberg (Maarkedal, BE), ook wel de Boonenberg genoemd, staat dit eerbetoon aan onze ex-wielrenner Tom Boonen (°Mol [BE], 05 oktober 1980). Hij maakte van deze bekende kasseiklim zijn handelsmerk door er vaak op explosieve wijze weg te rijden en zo de beslissende plooi in de Ronde Van Vlaanderen te leggen. Deze wielerklassieker won hij driemaal: in 2005, 2006 en 2012.
De sculptuur is een bronzen afgietsel van zijn benen, geplaatst op een betonnen sokkel. De sokkel is laag gehouden om wielertoeristen en fans van Tom Boonen de mogelijkheid te geven om uit te rusten en/of te poseren bij de sculptuur.
Vanity Table, 2012

This monumental sculpture is inspired by the characteristic silhouette of a vanity table. The sculpture itself is also a silhouette, reflecting its surroundings. By referencing beauty—and, by extension, transience and decay—Vanity Table has become increasingly relevant. The impact of social media and the pressure to look fit, perfect, and healthy are more intense than ever.
Vanity Table is located in Reinaertpark in Destelbergen [Belgium]; it was installed there as part of the competition ‘A Home for a Sculpture’ / ‘Een thuis voor een Beeld’.
Deze monumentale sculptuur is geïnspireerd op het typische silhouet van een opmaaktafeltje. De sculptuur zèlf is ook silhouet en weerspiegelt de omgeving. Refererend aan schoonheid en dus ook aan tijdelijkheid en verval, is Vanity Table alleen maar relevanter geworden. De impact van sociale media en de dwang om er fit, perfect en gezond uit te zien is dwingender dan ooit.
Vanity Table staat in het Reinaertpark in Destelbergen [BE] en werd er geplaatst in het kader van de wedstrijd ‘Een thuis voor een beeld’.
